About Us

Who are we? Where did we come from?

We are Milton United Reformed Church — part of a strongly ecumenical church, happy to unite and work with Christians of every denomination.

01 — Our story

How we came to be

Our roots stretch back through three unions that brought different traditions together into one church.

1972

The United Reformed Church is born

English Congregational and Presbyterian churches amalgamate to form a new, united church.

1981

Churches of Christ join us

Our family grows as the Churches of Christ become part of the United Reformed Church.

2000

Scotland comes on board

The Congregational Church of Scotland joins, completing the story of how we came to be.

02 — How we are run

Decisions are made by church members, not imposed from above. Our structure can be drawn as three concentric circles: the General Assembly at the centre, the 13 Synods (areas) around it, and the local churches on the outside.

Ideas, plans and questions flow freely backwards and forwards between all three. We at Milton are one of 105 churches in the Wessex Synod, which covers Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and parts of Surrey — plus the Channel Islands.

Our ministers

Our ordained ministers — both men and women — are trained at one of three colleges in the UK: Glasgow, Manchester and Cambridge.

Happily ecumenical

We are glad to unite and work with churches of other Christian denominations — that openness is part of who we are.

03 — Our aim

You really are welcome here.

Our aim is to share God's love with our local community in any way we are able. We genuinely welcome all people — every age group, ethnicity and social background — to our services and other events.

Friendly dogs on leads are welcome too.
